For a long time the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with creationists, afraid that it could give the movement more credibility. However, silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is just one aspect of how the development paradigm has changed.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their environments which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. This differential reproduction can, over time, lead to the emergence and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing. However, the concept has had a variety of meanings over the years as it has taken form in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living things develop characteristics to increase their chances of living or producing offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Such a variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and is the primary driver behind evolutionary change. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they aren't passed down to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific tests, creationists have seized on the idea that evolution is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high-school textbooks, including the removal of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestral bird's parent.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology and helps scientists discover how living things operate and grow. Evolution also shows the connections between species. Scientists study evolution to better understand nature and make useful discoveries, such as the development of new drugs.

The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. No other scientific theory explains more about the universe and life on earth. It is important to note that evolutionary biology doesn't interfere with religious beliefs, since the theory is based on processes, objects, and events within the physical world.

In fact many religious individuals have found ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolutionary theory. Some Christians, for example, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have a common ancestry to other animals.

It is essential that science educators advocate for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in some countries around the globe, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made progress in a few states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks to include content on the evolution of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.

Although these are alarming developments, it is also important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. Some scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions such as the development of new medicines, while others do so to improve the quality of animal and plant species, usually for the benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a deep religious belief in God and want to know how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists generally fall in two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs are not as well-known, but they're just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a lie.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the founders of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their position "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this theory, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. Eventually the evolutionary changes produce new species that are like the original ones.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event called the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the first species were all created simultaneously, and that they grew slowly afterwards. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life can't come from non-living matter.

In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they will remove the mention of evolution in their books. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. STR has achieved its first victory by eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The next step is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of students in biology revealed that half of them didn't believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists across the United States.

The KACR has achieved a number of things through its lectures and seminar events.  에볼루션 바카라 체험  publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and an ebook. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences with a creationist viewpoint, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
